Camp Description

This summer CYT campers will be on a safari to discover the exciting challenges that life in the jungle has to offer. They will explore the Lion King Pride Lands, have fun "Trashin' the Camp" with Tarzan, and discover the "Bare Necessities" with Baloo. All the difficulties of the wild will be overcome as the explorers "Dig a Little Deeper" and find that by working together they can overcome all the obstacles and present a showcase by week's end that will have audiences simply roaring as students act, sing, and dance to the rhythm of the Jungle! This jam-packed, fun-filled camp includes focused, age appropriate theater classes, stable group games, team challenges, prizes, t-shirts, and much more. This camp is not only a great intro to theater for stage newbies, but also a challenging program for the more seasoned actor. Camps are filling fast, so don't wait to sign up!

Theresa VanWetten

Theresa VanWetten is the Artistic Director for CYT Portland. Her passion for the arts began with her first Portland Park and Rec ballet class at the age of 5. She received her dance training through grade school and high school at Eckel's School of Dance in Sherwood and Anita Pienovi's School of Dance in Beaverton. At the University of Oregon Theresa was privileged to study dance under Susan Zadoff and Janet Descutner. She was a Thespian of troop #2833 at Tigard High School and continued acting in college and community theater. She coached and choreographed for various Oregon High Schools including, Tigard, Tualatin, and Clackamas, which gave her a wide range of experience working with students. She was a Blazer Dancer for 3 years and coached and choreographed the Portland Forrest Dragon Cheerleaders for 3 more years. At June Taylor School of Dance Theresa taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced dance for 6 years. She has been married to her best friend Ray for 32 years and they have 9 children and 4 grandchildren. As a follower of Jesus Christ, her greatest desire now is to help promote the arts in a safe, loving, and professional environment so students can develop their own passion for creativity and find their worth from God's perspective at the same time.

Sandy Shaner

Sandy Shaner has been involved with the performing arts for 40 years. She studied both Dance and Early Childhood education at PSU, in addition to her training through multiple dance academies, including The Portland Dance and Northwest Dance Academies. Sandy has been an instructor of both drama and dance and is currently in her 21st year at Lake Oswego Academy of Dance. She also enjoys choreographing musical productions for schools in Portland, but most of all she loves being a part of the CYT family, where her dance background and her love of Jesus come together.

Jay Tatco-Nowak

I started teaching at CYT last year as a teacher for Vocal Technique. I also served as the Musical Director for Beauty and the Beast Jr. and Scrooge. I am the Worship Leader at Horizon Community Church - Lake Oswego campus. My musical background is in Vocal Performance, with a Bachelors of Music degree from BIOLA University. I also have a background in stage and film acting.

Etsegenet VanWetten

Segie VanWetten has enjoyed being part of CYT for 7 years. She leveled up in Fall of 2017 and is ready and challenged for the new roles she will have in teaching.  Favorite roles include Miss Hannigan in “Annie Jr.” , Tiger Lily in “Peter Pan", and most recently Feather Duster in  “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”.   She has accomplished 15 productions with CYT. In her free time Segie enjoys makeup, hair design, and doodling. She is super excited to have the opportunity to be the Our Gang teacher this session.
